Title: Performance Analysis of Beamforming in Smart Antennas Using Least Mean Square Algorithm

Abstract: On this thesis project, the least mean square (LMS) algorithm has been applied for smart antennas as adaptive beamforming algorithm to dynamically adapt the radiation pattern toward the signal of interest (SOI) and the nulls toward the signal not of interest (SNOI). The performances of beamforming were tested for traditional LMS and normalized LMS. Also, performances of beamforming were tested for different number of antenna elements and different spacing between elements using matlab simulation. The results show that the convergence rate is faster for normalized LMS than traditional LMS and the radiation pattern is approximately the same for the two algorithms. Sharper beams are directed towards desired signals as more elements are used in antenna array. Also, spacing between array elements has an effect on beamformer performance, from different numerical calculation it has been observed that element spacing of 0.5λ is a good value.
