Author: Hamid, Gaafar Bashier Suliman
Abstract: The main objective of this study is to investigate the socio-economic impacts of IFAD North Kordofan Rural Development Project (2000 - 2007).The project objective was to improve the living standards of the communities in the Project area and particularly to assure their food security. For the purpose of this study, both secondary and primary data were collected and used. Secondary data were obtained from the project documents and from other relevant sources. The primary data were collected through a socio- economic survey conducted in the study area using a questionnaire. The sample size of 384 respondents (households' heads) was selected randomly from 14 targeted villages in the project area. The statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) program was used for data analysis and management. The results obtained indicated that the project was successful in mobilizing the rural people in the project area, and had achieved a considerable amount of socio-economic impact. The inter-correlation analysis results show the presence of significant positive association between perceived positive impact of NKRDP and years of education of the respondents. The results of t-test analysis for variables comparing male and female respondents indicated the presence of significant differences in favour of households headed by males in terms of almost all of the study variables. The main recommendations of the study include: introducing new technologies in agriculture adaptable to the area to increase crop productivity, more efforts should be done to developing rural women and increasing their income. The micro finance system introduced by the project needs to be revised, developed and improved. The agricultural extension services provided in the area need to be more developed and adaptable to the area and farmers' needs.
