Title: Economic Evaluation on Photovoltaic and Wind Pump

Abstract: A typical of 5 feddans (21,000 m2) farm land situated at Al Gataina region, 65 km South of Khartoum is to be irrigated. Two irrigation systems are considered: Solar photovoltaic water pumping and wind pump system. A cost comparison analysis is done on the two irrigation systems. Three financial evaluations methods are applied. The methods for the economic assessment are used: simple and discounted payback period; present worth benefits; and life cycle cost. The simple Payback Period presented the solar photovoltaic water pump is 7.239 years, compared with 14.423 years for the wind pump. The Net Present Value Method (NPV) presented the solar photovoltaic water pump with positive value, compared with a negative value for the wind pump system. As well the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) presented the solar photovoltaic water pump with $ 10,290.75, compared with $14,959.89 for the wind pump system. Consequently the Solar Photovoltaic water pump project is accepted, while the other project is rejected.
