Title: Problems of Academic Writing Proficiency A Case study of Nursing Sciences First Year Students, University of Khartoum
Author: Adam, Abdelmahmoud Mohammed Ahmed
Abstract: This study aims at investigating the problems and the difficulties that first year nursing students at University of Khartoum have in academic writing, with the purpose of suggesting solutions for these problems and difficulties. The study examines the students’ difficulties and problems in developing cohesive and coherent text, instances of incorrect subject-verb agreement, wrong use of prepositions, subordinations and conjunctions. It also examines the students’ ability to state the purpose and the main idea of their writing as well as the ability to logically organize the text. This is in addition to investigating the effects of the students’ L1 (Arabic language) interference on their academic writing. The method used in this study is the analytical-descriptive one. To collect the data, about 30-first-year students’ essays were analyzed from linguistic, rhetoric and cultural perspectives. The findings of the study reveal that the students have problems and difficulties in most of the linguistic, rhetoric and cultural perspectives examined in the study. To help the students overcome these problems and difficulties of the academic writing, the study recommends that, when teaching writing in English, linguistic aspects of language should be integrated with rhetoric and cultural aspects of English language. The study also recommends avoidance of literal and direct use of L1 (Arabic) in English writing.
