Title: Variation in Seed Parameters and Germination of Acacia senegal var. senegal among and within Natural Populations from Clay Soils of Sudan
Author: Ahmed, Abdelgabar S.; Warrag, Essam I.
Abstract: This study investigated the variation in seeds characteristics and germination of A. senegal var. senegal among and within natural populations. Twelve locations were selected to represent the natural populations in the clay part of the gumbelt. Seeds were collected from ten trees taken randomly from each population. Seeds from each tree were collected separately, forming a half-sib family. Seed parameters and germination percentage were. measured per family and population. Significant variations in seed characteristics were detected between and within population. However, the germination showed significant differences between some families within and between locations. Significant positive correlations were obtained for seed weight with seed length and width. The results demonstrate that seed characteristics and germination are under genetic control among and within natural populations of var. senegal can be used as genetic markers in improvement programs.
