Title: Effects of Tree Age and Shoot Morphology of Acacia Senegal (L.) Willd. on Gum Yield in North Kordofan State
Author: Abdelrahman, Hiba M.; Warrag, Essam I.; Balla, Mohamed E.
Abstract: The relationships between age, shoot morphology, gum yield and seed yield of Acacia senegal trees were investigated at El Demokeya and El Himaira sites in North Kordofan State. The effect of tree age (5, 10,15 and 20 years) on shoot morphology and their effects on gum yield were studied. Tree height, diameter at base and crown width was correlated with gum yield based on data from 18-years-old plantations as well as natural stands. Also, Shoot parameters were correlated with seed yield in 16-years-old plantations. The effect of tree age on height, diameter, and crown width was significant only at El Himaira plantations. Tree height, diameter and crown width were not significantly correlated with gum yield at the two sites. Gum yield was significantly lower in natural stands than plantations in El Demokeya site. The general trend of gum yield was similar in both sites where yield increases slightly between 5 and 10 years reaching its peak at 15-years of age and then decreased. This trend can be used in the management of Acacia senegal plantations for gum production on sustainable basis.
