Title: Design and Implementation of a Navigation System

Abstract: This project is a feat of engineering that utilizes emerging technologies in conjunction with autonomous control to create a smart vehicle that is capable of navigating to a sequence of global coordinates without physical human intervention. Creation of the project is based on the need for an autonomous vehicle to accomplish tasks that otherwise may be time consuming or hazardous for human beings. In order to do this the global positioning system (GPS) was implemented as the means by which the vehicle knows its position on the earth. Orientation from a digital compass is used in conjunction with position information from the GPS receiver to steer the vehicle. A tracking system based on RF communication is also incorporated into the design. The project is built around a complex microcontroller system, integrating hardware and software, and interfacing the microcontroller with the components to quickly process data, control the motors and provide feedback information on board the vehicle. The vehicle was tested by giving it multiple waypoints; it navigated successfully to within the accuracy of the GPS receiver.
