Abstract: In recent years, we have witnessed an amazingly rapid evolution in wireless local area networks (WLANs). Due to the low cost, ease of deployment, and mobility support, IEEE802.11 WLANs have been used so widely that they become the dominating WLAN technology. For IEEE802.11 protocol the basic access mode in its medium access control (MAC) protocol is Distributed Coordination Function .the purpose of this project is to analysis the performance of one of IEEE802.11 standards. We chose the IEEE 802.11b standard for this particular investigation because of its widespread use, the vast amount of applicable literature, the variety of software simulation tools and the ease with which equipment can be obtained This thesis presents analysis of performance of Distributed Coordination Function specifically this thesis analysis in depth throughput and delay which the most important performance matrices in wireless local area networks the analysis is done by simulation .network simulator ns2 was used besides analytical model To verify the of the simulation results. Based on ns2 platform simulation study was conducted using two parameters the number of nodes (stations) and traffic in the network. We found the DCF performance is very sensitive to the numbers of stations and traffic competing on the channel especially when Basic Access Mode employed. The project fulfilled it intended objectives.
