dc.description.abstract Four cultivars (Campbell, Butler, Sinnari and Local) of Valencia oranges were grown in the heavy clay soils of central Sudan and evaluated for physical and chemical changes from fruit setting to maturity. There were significant differences among the four cultivars in their physical characters as well as among the different stages of development. The differences among the four cultivars in the juice content and the total soluble solids were significant, whereas the total sugar contents were not significantly different. The total soluble solids in the juice of Campbell and Butler cultivars exhibited a consistent reduction after the third month till the sixth month and then increased until the eighth month. The total soluble solids in the juice of Sinnari and Local cultivars showed a gradual increase from the third month throughout the developmental stages until the eighth month. The total sugar content in the fruit juice of the four cultivars were inconsistent, Le., increasing and decreasing throughout the different developmental stages. It tended to increase between the fourth and the fifth, and sixth and the seventh month and then decreased at the eighth month in the fruit produced by the four cultivars. en_US
