Title: Correlation and Path Coefficient Analysis of Some Characters in Roselle (Hibiscus Sabdariffa var. Sabdariffa.)

Abstract: Nine genotypes of roselle were evaluated at Shambat, Sudan, for two consecutive seasons (1990/91 and 1991/92), using a randomized complete block design with four replications. Data were collected on 11 characters, namely, days to 50% flowering, plant height, number of branches/plant, number of capsules/branch and per plant, calyx length, calyx weight/capsule, calyx yield/plant, 1000 seed weight, seed protein content and seed oil content. Genotypic and phenotypic correlations between different characters were determined. Calyx yield/plant showed significant positive genotypic and phenotypic correlations with calyx weight/capsule and calyx length in both seasons. In the two seasons, the number of capsules/plant gave significant positive genotypic and phenotypic correlations with plant height, number of branches/plant and number of capsules/branch but significant negative correlation with calyx weight/capsule. The genotypic correlations of the calyx weight/capsule and calyx yield/plant with the oil content were negative and significant in both seasons. These characters also showed significant negative genotypic association with protein content in the second season. The path analysis indicated that the number of branches/plant had the highest direct influence on calyx yield/plant followed by calyx weight/capsule. Thus, selection for high number of branches/plant and heavy calyx weight/ capsule will result in high calyx yield/plant.
