Title: Humidity Responses of Two Desert Beetles Adesmia Antiqua and Pimelia Grandis

Abstract: Information has been obtained on sensory responses to humidity in two desert beetles, Adesmia antiqua and Pimelia grandis. The effects of hydration, desiccation and light on these responses were also investigated. Survival time of the two beetles under conditions of desiccation and starvation was determined. Both species were found to be hygronegative. Hydration resulted in a reduction of the humidity response. Desiccation for several days, however, resulted in a complete reversal of the hygronegative reaction. Restoration of the hygronegative reaction was achieved by direct drinking. Reactions to light overrode those to humidity in the case of P. grandis but the reverse occurred in case of A. antiqua.
