Title: Performance of Center Pivot Irrigation Systems with Different Spray Nozzles and Travelling Speeds

Abstract: : This study was conducted during the period November 2014 to February 2015 in Hassad Farm of the Central Trade Company (CTC) where alfalfa is produced for export. The Farm is located at km 114 west Omdurman, longitude 30o42E and latitude 16o24N. The experimental work involved hydraulic evaluation of three center pivot irrigation systems each with a set of well known spray nozzles and travelling at two different rated rotational speeds of 30% and 50%, respectively. The spray nozzles used were designated by the trade names Nelson, Sinninger and D3000. Average values ranging between 69% to 87% were obtained for the coefficient of uniformity (Cu%) under the two rated speeds of the center pivot systems following the methods recommended by Christiansen (1942) and Heerman-Hein (1968). Average values in the range of 61% to 78% were obtained for the distribution uniformity (Du%) under the same conditions, whereas for the application efficiency (Ea%) the center pivot systems recorded values ranging between 75% and 87% at the two rated speeds. On the other hand, average values ranging between 1.2 to 1.6 were obtained for scheduling uniformity (Su). The effect of cleaning the spray nozzles after prolonged periods of use was reflected in increases of 9%, 13% and 3% for Cu%, Du% and Ea%, respectively, and an improvement of 10% for Su. It is apparent from the study that any one of such nozzles can be used to give satisfactory results, however, it is recommended that the nozzles should be cleaned frequently, especially after prolonged time of use.
