Author: Khalifa, N; Hamid, AS
Abstract: Background The aim of this study was to assess the degree of satisfaction of patients with complete dentures and the most common post insertion complaint in a Sudanese sample recruited from different dental faculties in Khartoum State. Patients and Methods This was a descriptive, cross sectional study, in which patients were interviewed about socio-demographic information, previous prosthesis experience, self-evaluation of general health, frequency of denture wearing and satisfaction with prosthesis in relation to discomfort, retention, function, aesthetics, phonetics and vague complaints using a structured modified questionnaire. Results A total of 100 edentulous patients, aged between 20 to 90 years were investigated during the study period. Females were more satisfied with complete dentures than males. Most people were satisfied with their dentures while only 31% were dissatisfied. Frequency of denture wearing was highly related to satisfaction with complete dentures. Other factors associated with dentures’ satisfaction were pain, retention, mastication, speech, occlusion, coughing and yawning while wearing dentures. The quality of dentures was strongly related to patients’ satisfaction with complete dentures. Conclusion When constructing dentures, it is important to bear in mind that several factors of a functional nature were related to denture satisfaction. Dentures should be of a good quality to ensure patients satisfaction. Patients would also benefit of good post insertion instructions.
