Title: Normal Parameters of the Blink Reflex
Author: Eltahir, Ammar; Musa, Amani
Abstract: Objective The objective of this study was to assess the normal physiological parameters of blink reflex in Sudanese population. The study was meant to compare between the parameters of both the right and left sides and the effect of age and gender on these parameters. Materials and Methods Fifty normal healthy individuals were included in the study. Blink reflex test with stimulation of supraorbital nerve on both sides was done. Latencies of the blink reflex were recorded bilaterally using Digital Medelec synergy machine. Analysis of data collected, yields figures of mean values for parameters of blink reflex in Sudanese population comparable to that of other populations. Results There is no significant difference between Right and Left parameters of blink reflex. Female subjects had shorter Lt R2c latency (the second contralateral response on the right side when stimulation is delivered to the left supraorbital nerve) compared with males (p=0.042). Conclusion The study showed that as age increases Lt R1 latency (the first reflex on the Left side when stimulation is delivered to the Left supraorbital nerve) and LT R2i latency (the second ipsilateral response on the Left side when stimulation is delivered to the left supraorbital nerve) increases
