Abstract: This study was carried out at the Demonstration Farm of Agricultural Research Station, Shambat (longitude: 320 30′ E latitude: 150 39′ N), during the period from August to September 2015, to determine the effect of depth of operation on tractor and chisel plow performance. The total area of the experiment was 2337m2. The studied depths were 15, 20 and 25cm. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Data were collected on fuel consumption, slippage, draft, effective field capacity, field efficiency, and width of cut. The results showed that, the highest value of fuel consumption (13.1 l/ha) was recorded for the depth 25 cm as compared to 20 and 15cm which recorded 10.6 and 8 l/ha, respectively. The depth 25cm recorded the highest value of slippage (13%) while the depths 15 and 20cm gave the lowest values (9 and 10% respectively). The depth 25cm recorded the highest value of draft (12.7 kN) while the depths 15 and 20cm gave the lowest values (11.7 and 12.3 kN respectively).The depths 15, 20cm recorded the highest value of effective field capacity (0.57 ha/h) as compared to the depth 25 cm (0.56 ha/h).The results of field efficiency indicated that the depths 15, 20cm gave the highest value (79%) , while the depth 25 cm recorded the lowest value (77%).The depths 25, 20cm recorded the highest value of width of cut (1.26 m) as compared to the depth 15 cm (1.20 m). The statistical analysis showed that the effect of depth on draft and fuel consumption was highly significant. However, for the other parameters no significant differences were found.
