Title: Optimizing Crop Production in the Rahad Scheme
Author: Idris, B.; Ali, S.A.E.
Abstract: Studies involving linear programming could be most useful in a wide range of production optimization problems. The results of such studies could be valuable to private and public decision – makers. The linear programming model developed in this paper and applied to the Rahad Scheme demonstrates the relevance of the technique as a decision– making tool. The optimal crop combination was determined for six alternative solutions. Model results indicate that the optimal combination of crops in the scheme rotation would be obtained with reduced costs of production of the wheat and sorghum crops, with increasing yields and by using the available labour force more efficiently. Increases in net farm income of up to 45% – 48% over the present levels could be secured if a revision of the current cropping pattern is undertaken based on the results of this study.
