Title: Emergency Hysterectomy in Obstetric Practice in Al Madinah Al Munawarh, Saudi Arabia.

Abstract: A retrospective study of 26 patients who underwent emergency hysterectomy in the course of obstetric practice was conducted. The incidence was 1 in 1560 deliveries (26 in 40596). The main indications were ruptured uterus (n:11) adherent placenta (n:9), and extension of caesarean section incision (n:2). 12 Patients (46%) had total abdominal hysterectomy and 14 had subtotal abdominal hysterectomy. All patients required liberal blood transfusion. Bilateral Ligation of internal iliac artery was performed in six patients. There was no maternal mortality. Post-operative morbidity occurred in about 40% of patients.
