Title: Clutter And Backscatter Cross-Section of Dust Storms at X-Band

Abstract: Clutter and backscatter cross-section due to dust storms are computed for frequencies at the x-band. Expression are derived for the operation parameters (i) echo (clutter) power, and (ii) backscattering cross-section. The variation of these parameters are given for different storms visibilities and radar ranges. The propagation medium parameters needed to investigate the problem are given. The dust dielectric constant is reviewed, an empirical equation is given to predict the dust dielectric constant at any air relative humidity. The particles-size distribution, (PSD), of dust is measured and studies. Results show that the PSD cumulative curve can be approximated by straight line, however, there is no single straight line to estimated all dust sample PSD. The number fraction of the dust particles’ diameters is derived and found to be inverse proportional to the third power of the particle diameter.
