Title: Effect of Dexamethasone on Weight Gain, Blood Parameters and Functions of Liver and Kidneys of Rabbits (Oryctolaguscuniculus)
Author: Mohamed, Hagir Hayder Abdalla
Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the effect of dexamethasone on the blood parameters, functions of vital organs such as liver and kidneys, changes of animal body weight as well as the internal and external appearance of animals. For this purpose, two groups each of six male rabbits; one to act as the experimental group and the other as the control group were used. For the experimental group, one tablet containing 0.5 mg of dexamethasone was crushed roughly and dissolved completely in 2 ml of distilled water. Then the dose was given orally to each of this group daily for six weeks while each of the control was given distilled water alone. Blood parameters namely; RBCs, WBCs, PLT, HGB, HCT, MCV, MCH and MCHC were measured weekly by Sysmexautomerer 8999. The metabolic constituents, electrolytes and body weights were all measured every two weeks. Glucose, Chol, TG, LDLP and HDLP were measured by automated analyzer (Hitachi), Kidney indices; creatinine and urea, and liver enzymes; ALT, AST and ALP by Spectrophotometer Apparatus while electrolytes: Na+ and K+ by Flame photometer Apparatus and the body weight changes by ordinary balance. With the exception of WBCs, PLT, K+,HDLP and changes of animal body weights, all remaining blood parameters and metabolic constituents, indices of liver and kidneys and electrolytes were highly significantly increased (P ≤ 0.001). The drug also lead to inflation of abdomen, enlargement of stomach and appearance of moon face and did not affect the appearance of limbs and neck of the animals. This study concludes that dexamethasone drugs had induced changes in mean values of blood parameters, metabolic constituents, indices of kidneys and enzymes of liver, electrolytes as well as in the animal's bodyweight.
