Author: Adlan, Ahmed Elmamoun Hamid
Abstract: This study attempted to elucidate the opinions and attitudes of farmers and extension agents towards the establishment of an agricultural TV channel that the federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has intended to launch. The study adopted the descriptive approach and focus group discussion using the non random purposive sampling with six groups of respondents in Khartoum state, three groups of farmers and three groups of extension agents, so as to figure out their attitudes toward the channel. The study also interviewed some active actors about establishing the channel, content analysis was used to achieve the objectives of the study. The study revealed that 61 % of farmers and 55% of extension agents indicated that the model of specialized agricultural channels is successful, while others responded that such channels are not successful and turned into advertising. All the indicating respondent farmers and extension agents of the two groups agreed upon the importance of establishing an agricultural channel so as to reflect the activities of this pivotal sector and transfer the agricultural technologies effectively. The study revealed that 88% of farmers and 77% of extension agents think that such agricultural channel has a great chance to success and it will be accepted and watched if it is attractive and unbiased. Also, the study showed that the main obstacle that blocks the way of launching the channel is the shortage of funding, as the government doesn’t allocate enough budget for agricultural sector. Therefore, the role of partners from private sector is a necessity. The study suggests the importance of conducting a stakeholder's analysis study to recruit partners and fund raisers for the channel. The study recommended that farmers interests and issues must be put first in all agricultural programs prepared and designed by the channel .The extension agents must attend training sessions related to mass media industry, so that can be capable of working the channel and reflect farmers’ needs.
