Abstract: The electric power transmission and distribution industry, with more than 100 years history, has evolved into one of the largest industries. Secure and reliable operation of the electric power system is fundamental to economy, social security and quality of modern life.This study is mainly concerned with analysis and design of distance protection of high voltage transmission lines in electrical power systems in details. In addition to that, it investigates the distance protection of Alfao-Algadarif transmission line, as a case study. Transmission line parameters data were collected and ETAP software program was used to simulate the fault analysis.Results have shown that there have been differences between the prevailing old settings and the calculated settings for the protection sectors known as Zone2 and Zone3. After the new calculation setting values for Zone2 have decreased by 15.36% compared the old setting where as Zone3setting values decreased by 40.959%. The simulation results showed that the calculated settings were very acceptable. These results can assist power industry to choose the right protection settings, which would improve the survivability, minimize blackouts, and would reduce interruption costs.
