Abstract: The objective of this study was to estimate the amount of water lost from the network and to assess the impacts of leakage on consumers in karary locality ,Omdurman. The methodology adopted included a questionnaire and analysis to verify water sustainability in the study area. Field studies were carried out to attain information on water supply and consumption in order to estimate water loss. The study covered 31085 housesin the study area. The study area is supplied from Elmanara water treatment plant. Forty two questionnaires were distributed randomly in 28 Districts of the study area for assessing the impact of water shortage on consumers .The water supply network was examined for leaks and burst pipes. Water loss was determined by considering water consumption and water production in the study area. Water consumption was obtained from the records provided by two consultants (Shoura Consult, Biwater Company together with the records from Khartoum State Water corporation office (KSWC). Water production was obtained from the average records from Elmanara water treatment plant supplying the houses in the study area. Computed lost water was38.2%after eliminating unreliable estimate by one of the consultants (Shoura Consult).This estimate of water loss is just higher than that estimated by KSWC in 2012(35%).The result of this study showed that water loss is high and maybe due to the poor implementation during the construction of the network and due to negligence in operation and maintenance of the network .The residents are suffering from scarcity of water supply due to pipe bursts and leakages in the water system. They are forced to fetch water manually or by small tankers from neighboring districts, which add financial burden on families. It is recommended that measures should be taken to maintain and repair water supply network to reduce leakage. High quality of pipes should be installed and water network should be monitored regularly.
