Title: Prevalence of Staphylococcus species in Broiler Carcasses at Prepackaging Point in some Poultry Slaughterhouses in Khartoum state
Author: Abdulhafiz, Omaima Abdulrahman
Abstract: This study was carried out to isolate and identify Staphylococci bacteria which contaminate the poultry carcasses in slaughterhouses in Khartoum State which may cause food poisoning. The total number of swabs was 100; 40 from Khartoum, 30 from Omdurman and 30 from Bahri cities. The swab samples were collected randomly from chicken carcasses slaughtered in poultry slaughterhouse located in Khartoum, Omdurman and Bahri cities in Khartoum State. The samples were taken at prepackaging point. After collection, isolation and identification of Staphylococcus species were done by using different biochemical tests. Staphylococcus species isolated were found belong to 11 species of Staphylococcus genus and were identified as follows: 1) coagulase-positive species and these were Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus leei, Staphylococcus lutrae. 2) coagulase-negative species which were Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus auricularis, Staphylococcus saccharolyticus, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Staphylococcus xylosus, Staphylococcus felis, Staphylococcus sciuri and Staphylococcus caseolyticus. It is concluded from this study that the highest percentage of Staphylococcus species isolation was from Khartoum city (90.9%) followed by Omdurman (81.8%) and then Bahri city (63.6%). And also confirms the presence of pathogenic bacteria of public health importance in fresh chickens found in all slaughterhouses. The recommendation of this study is to make an education program for proper hygiene and improvement of management plan.
