Abstract: High Rate Settlers are widely used in many applications to improve water quality, increase capacity and reduce chemical consumptionin clarifiers. The objective of this study was to evaluatehigh rate settlers applications and benefits,compare the density of suspensionsfor BlueNile in Bahri water treatment plant and White Nile in Kosti power plant water treatment station, also detention time in case of conventional clarifiers and High Rate settlers. This research proved that high rate settlers are effective in water clarification. The density for Blue and White Nile suspensionswere determined as 1.0118kg/l and 1.0015 kg/l respectively, calculations for settling velocities for White Nile and Blue Nile suspensions after chemical treatment were 0.6048 m/h and 1.95m/hrespectively. The detention time for the Blue Nile waterwas2.1 hours and 0.05 hour in case of high rate settlers, and for the White Nile water was 6.6 hours and 0.17 hour in case of high rate settlers.In spite of low turbidity, Calculations as well as actual operation showed that the White Nile water is difficult to clarify because the density of suspensions and water haveaslight difference so the separation process needs more chemicals dosing and more detention time.Accordingly, it is recommended to adopt high rate settlers for existing and planned water treatment plants.
