Title: Impact of Orthodontic Treatment Need on Oral Health Related Quality Of Life among Secondary School Students in Khartoum Locality

Abstract: Background: Recently there is a growing interest in relating malocclusion to oral health related quality of life. This is due to the fact that malocclusion not only cause functional limitation, but can also play an important role in social acceptance and interactions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the orthodontic treatment need and oral health related quality of life among 13 to 17 year old Sudanese high school students in Khartoum area. Methods:This was a descriptive cross-sectional school-based study. The sample comprised 715 students,400 male (55.9 %) and 315 female (44.1%). Each participant was assessed for orthodontic treatment need and oral health-related quality of life by using the dental health component of orthodontic treatment need index and the oral health impact profile. Results: Students who had little or no, borderline, and definitive need for orthodontic treatment represented 71.7%, 20.4%,and 7.8% respectively and orthodontic treatment needs did not significantly affect the oral health related quality of life of the students. Conclusion:Malocclusion did not significantly affect oral health related quality of life in either sex, howeverfeeling oftension and having some embarrassment had significantly affect females of borderline orthodontic treatment needs, Females of definitive need of treatment exhibit a significant influence on being self conscious.
