dc.description.abstract Background: Oral habits are one of the major etiological factors of malocclusion. Early recognition of it’s presence, prevention and interception is very important to avoid abnormal growth of the jaws and function of the orofacial musculature. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of oral habits and its association with certain parameters (age, gender, child rank in the family, mother education and feeding type and duration)as well as the effect on the primary dentition . Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using questionnaire and clinical examination of 489 preschool Sudanese children 3-5 years old, from randomly selected kindergartens in Khartoum locality. Results: Prevalence of oral habits was found to be 30.3%. Thumb sucking habit was the most prevalent habit. No significant associations was found between oral habits and the age and gender.A significant association was found between oral habits and the first child in the family, high maternal education and breast feeding for one year or longer (P<0.05). A higher prevalence of all types of malocclusion were found among children with thumb sucking while children with nail biting show very low prevalence of malocclusion. Conclusion: Oral habits have a prevalence of 30.3% among the Sudanese preschool children and a strong effect of oral habit was found on primary dentition. en_US
