Title: Molluscicdal and activity of aqueous extract of Citrulluscolocynthis fruits against Biomphalaria snails under laboratory conditions.

Abstract: Background: Snails control is one of the measures used in the control of schistosomiasis. In this study molluscicdal (bayluscide) and activity of aqueous extract of Citrullus colocynthis fruits against Biomphalaria snails was tested under laboratory conditions. This was an experimental study and all specimens of the trials were collected from Al Kalakla Alguba in Jabal Awliya locality, Khartoum State. The study aimed at assessing molluscicdal (bayluscide) and activity of aqueous extract of Citrullus colocynthis fruits against Biomphalaria snails under laboratory conditions. Method: An aqueous extract of Citrullus colocynthis fruits was prepared in the laboratory by dissolving 50 grams of Citrullus colocynthis fruits powder in 500 ml of water (concentration 0.1). An amount of 5 grams of molluscicdal powder were also dissolved in 500 ml of water (concentration 0.01). Ten different concentrations of aqueous extract (0.0025, 0.005, 0.0075, 0.01, 0.0125, 0.015, 0.0175, 0.02, 0.0225 and 0.025) of Citrullus colocynthis fruits were prepared. In addition also ten concentrations of molluscicdal (bayluscide) (0.00025, 0.0005, 0.00075, 0.001, 0.00125, 0.00150, 0.00175, 0.002, 0.00225 and 0.0025) were also prepared. Each of the above concentrations, was placed in a separate pre-cleaned plate. Twenty snails were placed in each of the ten plates that contain aqueous extract of Citrullus colocynthis fruits. Extra twenty snails were placed in each of ten plates containing molluscicdal (bayluscide). After 24 hours, the death among the snails for each concentration was recorded. The percentage of death was transformed to the probit units and logarithms for each concentration was obtained and regression line for each toxicity experiment was drawn. Each experiment was repeated three times. Finally the Lc50 of the aqueous extracts of Citrullus colocynthis fruits and the Lc50 of molluscicdal on Biomphalaria snails were obtained. Results: The results of the aqueous extract of Citrullus colocynthis fruits experiments showed that the average mortality rate of the highest concentration used (0.025) was 98% while the least concentration (0.0025) gave a mortality rate of 8% and the Lc50 was found to be 0.01. The results of molluscicdal (bayluscide) experiments showed that the average mortality rate of the highest concentration used (0.0025) was 85% and the least concentration (0.00025) gave a mortality rate of 8% and the Lc50 was found to be 0.0013. Conclusion: The aqueous extract of Citrullus colocynthis fruits is effective against Biomphalaria snails, it gave an average mortality rate of 98% among the Biomphalaria snails tested compared to 85% mortality caused by molluscicdal (bayluscide).
