Title: Conditions on Feature Specification in Tima
Author: Bashir, Abeer Mohamed Ali
Abstract: Tima has a range of bound morphemes, both affixes and clitics, which take on different morphological shapes as a result of ATR vowel harmony as well as rounding harmony. The harmony involves a root-controlled system which operates with a degree of underspecification, i.e., the vowel of a bound morpheme (affix or clitic) is an underspecified vowel whose exact shape is determined by the root or stem vowel in terms of the features [ATR], [round], and [front]. However, as a result of certain conditions, some underspecified morphemes become fully specified. These conditions involve: (i) the phonetic nature of the root/stem vowel and the affix/clitic vowel, and (ii) the syllable structure of the verb root or stem'. The paper is structured as follows. In section 2, the basic vowel system of Tima is presented. Section 3 describes the classical systems of ATR and rounding harmony. Sections 4 and 5 deal with rounding and fronting harmony. Section 6 investigates the phenomenon of underspecification that shows up in the overall vowel harmony system of Tima. Section 7 accounts for the conditions that control the feature specification on bound morphemes. The paper ends with a summary and conclusion.
