Title: Testing of Equilibrium Data for Water-Ethanol System Using VLE 100D Apparatus

Abstract: In this research the VLE100D was tested where experiments were carried out to study the relationship between vapour and liquid at equilibrium under atmospheric condition. The binary system of Water and ethanol have been tested using a circulation-type apparatus. The apparatus (VLE100D) was used to investigate the saturation data in which both vapor and liquid phases are recirculated. The results were used to plot the equilibrium curves at atmospheric pressure, and temperature up to 98℃. Samples of liquid were taken to determine its composition after the system reached an equilibrium state. The liquid phase samples composition were analyzed by refractometer (Abbe, Mettler), the results obtained were compared and found that to be similar to the data available in the literature. All data were compared with NIST data. Finally, the graph of mass fraction of vapour against mass fraction of liquid (x,y diagram) and the graph of temperature against mass of liquid and vapour have been plotted. Acording to the measurements , the saturation temperature data reached a maximum deviation of 2.339% from the data of NIST. The measurment of concentration have been realized by a refractometer type apparatus (Abbe, Mettler) with the thermostat set at 20℃. The concentration has reached a deviation of 0.299% at atmospheric condition. The apparatus has demonstrated its capability to investigate such fluids and also delivered accurate saturation data.
