Title: Seepage from water ponds “Hafirs” in Qoz Soils of Northern Kordofan

Abstract: The objective of this research is to study the permeability of Qoz soils and the different factors affecting seepage losses of water ponds “hafirs” constructed in Qoz soils. Qoz soil samples were collected from three different areas around Al Obied town. The soil samples were generally classified as silty sands. The permeability of the collected samples were measured using falling head test and Matsuo Honmachi Akai’s method. The results showed that the coefficient of permeability for the tested Qoz soils (k) ranged between 1.36Χ10-6 to 2.33 Χ 10-5cm/sec. Theoretical method (Vedernikov equation) was used to calculate the seepage losses from hafirs using assumed values for depth, width, slope of the hafir and the coefficient of permeability. The parametric evaluation has shown that the quantity of seepage increases when the coefficient of permeability, depth of water, width, and slope of hafir increase. However, seepage amount was found to be affected by the width more than the depth. Seepage increases significantly with mild increase in the coefficient of permeability, whereas it mildly increases with increasing the slope of the hafir. Seepage losses were compared with the estimated evaporation losses for a typical hafir size. The comparison has shown that for k values of 10-4 cm/sec seepage losses are up to 17% of evaporation losses, and that total seepage losses during the dry season reach 9% of total evaporation losses.
