Title: Nutritive Value of Three Pearl Millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) Genotypes

Abstract: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritive value of three pearl millet genotypes (Pennisetum glaucum L.), namely Kh9, Khw12 and KhG 13 as compared to the control sample 8Kh (Heraihry). The proximate chemical composition, amino acids profile, anti-nutritional factors, in vitro protein digestibility andminerals contentwere determined.The results showed significantdifferences(P≤0.05) among evaluated genotypes in all the estimated parameters. Moisture content ranged from 6.23 to 6.73%, ash content from 1.49 to 1.88%, crude protein content from 11.57 to 16.16%, fat contents from 4.23 to 5.48%, crude fiber content from 1.49 to 2.33%, and available carbohydrates from67.92 to 74.47%. Genotype Kh 9 showed higher level of most essential except tryptophan, and non-essential amino acids, compared to the other two genotypes and the control. The anti- nutritional factors showed tannin contents from 0.145 to 0.160%, phytic acid content from 525.33 to1060 mg/100g and polyphenols content from 269.67 to 1273 mg/100g; however, the in vitro protein digestibility ranged from 49.40 to 56.12%and the genotype KhG 13 showed the highest value, 56.12 compared to 55.50% for the control. A negative relationship was found between the in vitro protein digestibility and phytic acid content among the three genotypes under study. Determination of the minerals content (mg/100g) showed that pearl millet genotypes contained from 150.00 to 153.33 Ca, 190.00 to 220.00 Mg, 105.00 to 181.33 Na, 236.67 to 553.33 K, 166.67 to 170.00 P, 3.96 to 7.39 Fe and 0.291 to 0.402 Zn. The three genotypes showed high amounts of Na compared to previous findings reported in the literature. In conclusion, the three genotypes investigated showed good nutritive value (Kh 9 being the best) compared to the control ; hence the field production of all these genotypes, specially genotype Kh9 is recommended.
