Title: Phytochemical Investigation on Selected of the Five Plant Species from Jebel Marra, Southern Darfur, Sudan

Abstract: The objectives of this study include phytochemical screening for secondary in the stems, leaves and seeds of Dichrociphala chrysanthemifolia (Murr Murr), Momoridica balsamina (El-yeir), Waltheria indica (Irg-elfal), Sterculia setigera(Guldubaar)andCynanchum acutum (Irg-eldem);namely secondary plant metabolites using different solvents. They also include antioxidant activity and cytotoxic tests for the crude plant extracts; in which chemical tests and different analytical methods were used. Other methods were also used which included Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and Gas chromatography/Mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Antioxidant activity tests were carried out by the 2.2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrozyl (DPPH) method, while those specific for the cytotoxicity tests depended on the brine shrimp assay.The tests in which ethyl alcohol was used for extraction proved the presence of a number of secondary metabolites, many are shared between these plant parts; while other are restrict to specific parts of the plants. These compounds included flavonoid glycosides, tannins, triterpens, sterols, alkaloids, saponins, coumarins and cardiac glycosides. Test for antioxidant substances shared positive results for most of crude ethanol extracts. W. indica plant contained the highest antioxidant activity (86%) and only one which gavepositive result (70%)in ethyl acetate extract. Cytotoxicity tests proved varying degrees in all the tested plant parts.On the other hand, the TLC separation of the crude ethyl acetate extract, proved the presence of compounds like flavonoids (akamferol or quercetin),flavones; flavonols or flavonone and Phenyl carboxylic acids. The ethanol extract proved the present of alkaloids, carvone or pipartone and menthone acetate. In addition the GC/MS experiment proved the presenceof compounds which have antioxidant activity, for example Neophytadiene, phytol, Hexadecanoic, lenoleic acid, lenolenic acid, Oleic acid and Stearic acid,nonacosane, ethyl oleate, Lupeol acetate, Tocopherol(vitamin E),Stigmasterol andCapric acid. It is worth to be mentioned that some of these compounds are of specific effects in curing some diseases, for example, linolenic acid acid, palmitic acidsand unsaturated fatty acid. In addition to that compounds with significant cytotoxicity like Hexadecanoic acid, Eicosane, Heneicosane, lenoleic acid, Tetratriacontaneand Arachidic acid may be used to cure some diseases after reducing or neutralizing their cytotoxicity.
