Abstract: The typical energy generation from the utility grid consumes a lot of the planets natural resources like fossil fuel, also because of economic factors the electricity generation is leaning towards renewable energy generation, especially photovoltaic arrays (PV). The aim of this project is to implement a Smart Micro Gird infrastructure that is efficient and reliable, this Smart Grid uses photovoltaic solar generation, holds storage elements as a way of storing excess energy in off-peak periods and uses it to supply the load in the times where the grid is offline or the load is higher than the grid’s capacity. The Multi-Agent System (MAS) will be used to control and manage the operation. MATLAB’s SIMULINK was used to construct a practical model of the Smart Micro Grid and the components used in the model from the PV arrays to the batteries are discussed in the thesis, the model of the Smart grid uses PV arrays to supply power from the solar energy as it’s the most convenient renewable energy source in Sudan. The control over the Smart Grid and the decisions it makes is controlled via an operator agent through the JADE platform, the agent uses information obtained from the model to decide when to charge the batteries and when to use them to supply the load, the connection between JADE’s agent and the SIMULINK model was enabled by a basic interface between JADE agents and MATLAB using TCP/IP communication. The work discussed in this thesis represents only a fraction of what could be achieved by the integration of smart technology as a control system in power generation and grid optimization, future improvements can be achieved and many possibilities can be explored from here on.
