Title: Determination of Protective Relay Settings for Qunfudah North Substation in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: The main objective of this thesis is to determine the protective relay settings for Qunfudah North substation which is located in the southern area of Saudi Arabia. By following mathematical approaches and protective relays manufactures recommendations in addition to some technical considerations the protection settings for Qunfuda North substation equipment have been carried out. Also, a software program (ETAP) that simulates the kinds of power system faults has been used. The program simulation results as well as the calculation results have been shown in tables which describe the setting paramenters of the protective devices. The obtained results showed that the setting procedures that are normally followed by the protection engineers in the unit protection (differential protection) to protect tramsmission lines, busbars and transformers is the best and optimum. However, the protection system performance for the transmission lines can be enhanced to be more stable by reducing the number of the active zones in the distance protection and disabling the backup over current protection function which is different from the common practice normally followed, but it ensures more stable and satisfying response for the transmission line protection system
