Title: The Effect of Teaching Phonics to Improve Reading Skills A Case Study of Grade 5 Pupils in Omdurman Locality

Abstract: This study aims to prove that Phonics learning can improve the reading capabilities in grade fivebasic education pupils in Ahmed Bashir Al Abbady school, Omdurman locality. The researcher applied the experimental methodology. Grade five pupils in Ahmed Bashier Al Abbady basic school for girls in Omdurman locality were selected as the research population. And the researcher picked 40 pupils to be the research sample. That sample was divided into two groups: the control group which was taught reading traditionally and the experimental groupwas taught reading by the phonics methodology. The researcher designed, first, a pre-test to assess the standards and levels of the two groups in reading, and second, a post –test to assess the effect of Phonics learning on reading. The researcher chose the last two chapters in the SPINE book of English in addition to the Phonics program, which is a CD including the audio of the phonic sounds and songs, there are 28 stories to read. The application of the experiment took ten weeks, and the data results have been analyzed by using The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The study concluded that the teaching of English reading skills is facing some difficulties in the Sudanese governmental schools including the massive numbers of the pupils in the classrooms and the lack of time available to exercise the skill. The researcher also reached by analyzing the results of the pupils in the two tests pre-test and post-test that, there were statistical differences in the benefit of the experimental groupwhich proves that Phonics is highly effective in improving and developing oral reading skill, that’s for its ease as in teaching and learning for thepupils of the basic education how they were attracted by the usage of the techniques in the application of Phonics. The study recommends the importance of creating a comfortable atmosphere inside the classroom as well as providing enough time for practicing the reading skill. The study also recommends the application of Phonics with the necessary equipment and tools for its importance and effectiveness in teaching and learning of reading. The researcher also suggests adopting studies dealing with methodologies and techniques in teaching different English language skills.
