Title: In vitro Screening of Antimicrobial Activity of Lepidium sativum (habelrashad) Seed Extracts
Author: Mahmoud, Najat Fathalaleem Ebrahim
Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of lepidium sativum seed extracts. Methanol, petroleum ether and chloroform extracts of Lepidium sativum seed were prepared at five different concentrations (6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50% and 100%) and their antimicrobial properties were assessed using the disc diffusion method. The test organisms were four bacteria:Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhiand Bacillus subtilis and two fungiCandida albicans and Aspergillus niger. Each extract was tested in two replicate. The methanol extract of Lepidium sativum seed had antimicrobial activity at all concentrations against all tested organisms except Pseudomonas aeruginosa.Methanol extracthad high inhibitory effect against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus niger at 6.25% as it produced inhibitory zones of 22, 14, 14, and 10mm diameters, respectively. The most susceptible microorganism to methanol extract was Escherichia coli at 100% and 6.25% with inhibition zones of 35 mmand 22 mm diameters, respectively. The petroleum ether extract had no activity against all test organisms. at a concentration of 6.25%, methanoland chloroform extractsof Lepidium sativum had no activity against Candida albicans.Chloroform extracts had no activity againstCandida albicans , Salmonella typhi and E.coli at 12.5% and 6.25% concentrations. It was concluded thatmethanol extract of lepidium sativum seeds had a remarkable antibacterial and antifungal activity against the testedmicroorganisms. Further work is required to test other concentrations against other microorganisms and extracts and to identify the active principles
