Title: Sero – Epidemiology of Arboviruses South Khartoum State 2000
Author: Siddig, Hamadnalla Sirelkhatim
Abstract: This is a community-based study for sero-epidemiology of Arboviruses, conducted at the south of Khartoum State - Sudan in the year 2000. The overall aim is to determine the prevalence and pattern of West Nile Virus (WNV), Dengue Virus (DV) and Rift Valley Virus (RVV) activity in the study area. One thousand and hundred fifty seven individuals of different age groups were enrolled in this study, selected by household-based cluster random sampling. Pre-coded structured interview was used to obtain data on the demographic and environmental indicators. Blood samples were collected from all individuals and tested by ELISA and MAC-ELISA for IgG and IgM respectively to detect WNV,DV and RVV antibodies. All tests for RVV were negative. Sero-prevalences of WNV and DV antibodies were found to be 16% and 42% respectively. These findings indicated silent activity of WNV and DV in the study area and rings the bell for an emerging viral hemorrhagic fevers. Multinomial logistic regression test revealed the importance of use of water storage containers, lack of protective measures against mosquitoes and poor socio-economic status as important risk factors associated with sero-prevalence of WNV and DV. Pigeon and goats rearing were found to be associated with sero-prevalence of West Nile Virus. It is concluded that WNV and DV were prevalent in the study area and their prevalence was associated with poor socio-economic status, animal rearing and lack of control measures against mosquitoes . RVV activity was not detected in the study area which is a good sign in favor of the animal resources in the country. It is recommended that effective control measures against these emerging diseases should start without any delay so as to avoid a serious health problem.
