Title: Investigation of the Effect of the Addition of Zinc Oxide,Silica and Kaolin on the compressive Strength of Portland Cement Mortar

Abstract: An increasing rate in the world population is driving a rise in the consumption of cement to cater for all types of infrastructure. The shortage in supply, especially in developing countries, is leading to an increase in cost of buildings. Cheaper solutions are required so as to reduce the cost based on natural and synthetic chemicals. A range of properties are tested, however compressive strength is still one of the most important properties of mortar. This study aims to investigate the effect of adding Zinc oxide (bulk, micro scale and nano particles), Silica and Kaolin on the compressive strength of Portland cement Mortar. The mix portion of mortar were prepared with a water to cement ratio of 1:2, a cement to sand ratio of 1:2.5 and different percent of additives (0.2%, 5% and 10%). Results show that cement mortar, which didn’t contain zinc oxide, increases the compressive strength of blended mortar. After 2 days, the best result was obtained for an additive of 5% Kaolin and 5% Silica where there was a 33.48% increase, in compressive strength, relative to the control. However, after 28 days the best result attained was for an additive of 5% micro silica which resulted in a 13.26 % increase, in compressive strength, relative to control. As far as the addition of zinc oxide as an additive, further investigations into the effect of drying the cement mortar before curing still resulted in negative outcomes. Results clearly show that the best combination for enhancement of compressive strength is 5% Kaolin and 5% Silica.
