Title: Effect of Nitrogen Fertilization and Seed Rate on Nutritional Value of Sorghum bicolor Forage (Abusabien)

Abstract: The experiment was conducted to determine the effects of Nitrogen fertilizationand seeding rate on the quality of sorghum forage (Sorghum bicolor). The treatments consisted of two levels of nitrogen (0 and 80kg/ha) and three seed rates (20, 30 and40kg/fed). The experiment was designs using 2x3 factorialdesign. The data was analyzed using SPSS program.The results showed that the application of nitrogen fertilization caused a significant effected (P≤ 0.05) on crude protein (CP), ash, digestibility, nitrogen free extract (NFE), neutral detergent fiber(NDF), acid detergent lignin (ADL), calcium (Ca), potassium(K) and magnesium (Mg), while crude fiber (CF), ether extract (EE), acid detergent fiber (ADF), relative feed value (RFV) and phosphorous (P) revealed non- significant effect. Plots applied with 80 kg nitrogen recorded the highest value of CP (15.32%), ash (10.57%), DMD (57.76%) and Mg (0.33%), while the highest value of NFE, NDF, ADL, RFV, Ca and K were obtained at the control. The results indicated that the NFE, DMD, ash and K significantly (P≤ 0.05) increased with the increase in seed rate, while CP, NDF, ADL and Mg significantly (P≤ 0.05) decreased with the increase in seed rate. No significant decrease of CP, EE, and RFV were noted as seed rate increased, in addition to that, non-significant increase of ADF and Ca were registered as seed rate increased. It was concluded that as nitrogen fertilization increased and seed rate decreased, the quality of forage increased. So the cultivate of 80kg/ha nitrogen and 20kg/fed of seed rate was the best combination for obtaining the highest quality sorghum fodder.
