Title: Effect of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Fertilizers on Growth, Yield and Fatty Acids Composition of Seed Oil of Garden Rocket (Eruca sativa Mill.)

Abstract: A field experiment was conducted in the Demonstration Farm of the Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Khartoum at shambat (Lat 17º34'N and Long. 23º56'E and altitude 380 m above sea level), during summer season (March-August, 2015), to study the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers application on growth, yield, chlorophyll content of leaves (mg/L) and fatty acids composition of seed oil of two rocket varieties, namely “Siner33” (V1) and “Erbas 21” (V2). Two nitrogen levels (0 and 40 kgN/ha) and two phosphorus levels (0 and 50 kg P2O5/ ha). Urea (46% N) and super phosphate (48% P2O5) were used as source of nitrogen and phosphorus, respectively. The experiment was laid out in split-split plot design with four replications. Nitrogen treatments were designated to the main plots, whereas phosphorus levels and varieties were allotted to sub and sub-sub plots, respectively. The experiment area was (260m2). The parameters recorded were plant height (cm), number of leaves per plant, number of days to 50% flowering, fresh and dry weights of plants per hectare (kg/ha), 1000 seed weight, chlorophyll composition of leaves (mg/L) and fatty acid composition of seed oil. Statistical Analysis System Software (SAS, 2003) was used to analyze all data in this study.Results revealed that nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers had no significant effect on plant height (cm), number of leaves, fresh weight (kg/ha), dry weight (kg/ha) and number of days to 50% flowering. The variety ʽʽErbas 21ˮ had a higher fresh and dry weights (kg/ha) compared to variety ʽʽSiner33ˮ. No significant differences were detected due to application of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers onnumber of branches/plant, number of capsules/plant, seed weight (kg/ha) and1000 seed weight. control plants had a higher number of branches/plant, number of capsules/plant and seed weight, while nitrogen fertilizer showed a higher 1000 seed weight. There was a significantly difference between the two varieties on number of branches/plant and higher number of capsules/ plant, the variety “Siner33ˮ had a higher number of branches/plant and number of capsules/plant compared to variety “Erbas 21ˮ. Nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers had no significant effect on chlorophyll (a and b) content of leaves (mg/l), the variety “Siner33ˮ had a higher content of chlorophyll (a)with nitrogen fertilizer, while the variety “Erbas 21ˮ showed high content ofchlorophyll (b) with the combination of nitrogen and phosphorus.The followingfatty acids were found in a higher percentage with nitrogen fertilizer, namely, cis-8, 11, 14- eicosatrienoic (41.0%) and Palmatic acid (36.6%) in variety “Siner33ˮ. The variety “Erbas21ˮ had higher percentages of cis-11-eicosenoic acid (40.4%), linolelaidic acid (37.1%) and some of them with phosphorus fertilizer, elaidic acid (44.8%) and cis-10-heptadecenoic acid (35.7%) in variety “Siner33ˮ andcis-8, 11, 14- eicosatrienoic (43.4%).Palmatic acid (36.2%) in variety “Erbas 21ˮ. The combination of nitrogen and phosphorus showed a higher percentage of the fatty acid,archidic acid (44.8% and 39.6%) in the variety “Siner33ˮ and“Erbas 21ˮ, respectively. In conclusion, using of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers in the form of urea and super phosphate had no significant effects on growth, yield, and chlorophyll content of leaves of garden rocket.There was a high variation in the types and percentages of fatty acids composition of seed oil among varieties and fertilizers treatments. The variety “Erbas21”gave higher fresh weight and number of days to 50% flowering, while the variety “Siner33”gave higher numbers of branches and capsules. Since this work was conducted for one season, it is recommended to be repeated to confirm the results obtained.
