Abstract: This research aims to identify the effectiveness of a counselling program to improve self-esteem amongst mothers of the children with autism in Khartoum state. In order to achieve this goal,the study adopts the experimental approach. The research population is the mothers of the children with autism at the centres and schools for children with intellectual disabilities within Khartoum State.The research sample consists of 32 mothers selected by using purposive-sampling approach. The study uses the Cooper Smith Self-Esteem Inventory, as well as the proposed counselling program for self-esteem improvement constructed by the researcher. The obtained data are statistically processed through Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) using Pearson correlation coefficient, Cranach’s Coefficient Alpha, T-Test for two independent samples and Two-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).The study revealed the following findings:The counselling program proved its effectiveness for self-esteem improvement among mothers of the children with autism (p=0.05).There were no statistically significant differences in self-esteem improvement amongst mothers of the children with autism attributable to age ofthe mother, mother’s level of education, child’s gender, child’s age, or mother’s husband getting-married with another woman post-autism’s diagnosis(p=0.05). The results of the study also revealed presence of statistically significant difference among mothers of the children with autism attributable to the Centre/School in favour ofYounis Centre for Family and Child(p=0.05).The study made several recommendations including that the administrators of schools and centres for children with intellectual disabilities may apply this counselling program and other applicable programs which had proved their effectiveness, as well as paying more attention to intellectual-disability schools and improving their environments. Also academic departments and entities should carry out more researches and studies in order to reveal the real causes of Autism.
