Abstract: The present research examines the role of women in political participation and the extent to which this role influences the development of the new social media. The research focuses primarily on the extent to which women who are engaged in the field of political and journalistic work are able to employ modern means of communication to overcome the obstacles that limit their active political participation. The research aims to identify the extent to which party and journalistic leaderships use modern means of communication in political and media work, the extent to which party and media leaderships take advantage of the modern means of communication to serve their causes and to identify the capabilities of media and party leaderships to benefit from the modern means of communication. The significance of this research lies in the study of the role the modern means of communication play in motivating and encouraging the political participation of Sudanese women. The research adopted the historical and descriptive approaches in examining the most important stages through which Sudanese women have passed in both politics and journalism, in addition to the case study approach, with emphasis on the impact of the new social media on the political participation of the Sudanese women. The research used a variety of primary methods to collect information such as reports, interviews, focus discussion, and questionnaire, in addition to the secondary methods such as books and periodicals. The research came up with several findings, the most important of which are that the Sudanese women did not benefit from the development in the new social media in an ideal manner that is reflected in the increase, size and effectiveness of their political participation and patriarchal hegemony that is characteristic of the Sudanese society which restricted the increase in women’s political participation. The researcher concluded with a number of recommendations, including the need for the State to design objective policies to enable women to take advantage of their capacities, be they in the area of politics, journalism or comprehensive development in society so that half of the society will not stay idle and how to employ the social media, particularly WHATSAP, Face book and Twitter applications in increasing the effectiveness women’s political participation and how to use the social media in increasing political and social awareness.
