Title: Design of Wastewater Treatment Plant For Algunied Sugar Factory

Abstract: The aim of this study was to designwastewater treatment system for the Guneid sugar factory, which at present dischargesuntreated water directly into the Blue Nile River. The methodology of the study was: site visits, collection of primary and secondary data from official reports and concerned personnel and sampling of generatedwastewater inaddition to estimation of wastewater flow rates and laboratoryanalysis forbiologicaloxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) also total suspended solids (TSS). The quantity of the total wastewater produced was estimated at about 91200 m3/day which emanatefrom the following processes: cane wash26400m3/day, processing 1200m3/day (only 4.5% of total flow),condenser 60720m3/day, and boiler 2880 m3/day.Accordingly sedimentation basin was designedto handlecane washing effluents, and Sequence Batch Reactors(SBR)was designed totreat the processing water as follows: detention time 6hrs, volume of tank 500m3, area of tank 83.33m2 and depth of tank 6 m.The SBR technology was efficient for treating thisstrongindustrial waste water whichcontains high values of BOD = 800mg/l, COD = 1200mg/l,andTSS = 1050mg/l, the effluent characteristics after treatment plant: BOD = 25mg/l, COD = 60mg/l, TSS =20mg/l. The studyrecommends the followings: disposal ofeffluent wastewater from sedimentation tanks tocane irrigation channels.In operation of SBRunits oneshould avoid shortage of oxygen in the aeration tank, which can lead to growth of filamentous bacteria which affect badly the sludge retention time , avoid excessive aeration, which leads to high consumption of energy and consequently increases operating cost, monitoring the inlet BOD because it affects the efficiency of the treatment system.
