Title: Comparative Study of Adaptive Equalizer Based on Recursive Least Square Algorithm

Abstract: The basic form of a digital communication system consists of a transmitter, channel, and receiver connected together. The function of the transmitter is to convert a message signal generated by a digital source into a waveform suitable for transmission over the channel, the channel suffers from two major kinds of impairments are intersymbol interference and noise. The net result of the two impairments is that the signal received at the channel output is a noisy and distorted version of the signal that is transmitted, in order to reduce the effects of these distortions an equalizer is used at the receiver end. The function of the equalizer is to reconstruct the transmitted symbols by observing the received noisy signal. The adaptive equalizers using the recursive least-squares (RLS) algorithm is investigated for wireless communication systems. Both linear transversal equalizer and non-linear decision feedback equalizer (DFE) with RLS algorithm are evaluated in multipath fading channel model. The influence of some important parameters, such as the number of taps of the adaptive equalizers, and forgetting factor of the algorithm, are examined. Then, the rate of convergence and error variance with different algorithms are analyzed. Finally the validity of the theoretical results is verified through computer simulations. A MATLAB simulation program was used to implement RLS Algorithm to calculate the bit error rate and MSE vs. SNR with different parameter. The results obtained clearly indicate the significant advantage, in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, when a combination of channel coding and equalization is jointly used.
