Title: Hydraulic Evaluation of Center Pivot Irrigation System under Different Speeds

Abstract: This study was conducted during the period November to May 2017 in Alaarak Company where alfalfa is produced for export. The farm is located at km 68 west Omdurman, longitude 15°E and latitude 31° N. The experimental work involved hydraulic evaluation of a center pivot irrigation system traveling at three different rated rotational speeds (viz 40%, 70% and 100%). The evaluation was done following the well recognized methods recommended by Christiansen (1942) and Heerman and Hein (1968). Average values ranging between 85% to 90% were obtained for the coefficient of uniformity (Cu%) under the three rated speeds of the center pivot system. Average values in the range of 76% to 78% were obtained for the distribution uniformity (Du%) under the same conditions, whereas for the application efficiency (Ea%) the center pivot system recorded values ranging between 64% to73% at the three rated speeds. On the other hand, average values ranging between 1.27 and 1.31 were obtained for scheduling uniformity (Su). It can be concluded that in as far as the numerical values of hydraulic evaluation parameters (Cu, CuHH, Du, Ea and Su) there are no significant differences between rated rotational speeds of the center pivot system (40%, 70% and 100%). However each one of the speeds is used for a specific application purpose. The higher speed (100%) is used for the first irrigation to avoid washing of crop seeds and when fertigation is to be applied. The lower speeds of (40% and 70%) are the most common speeds used during the different stages of plant growth and immediately after first cuts to ensure more irrigation water is applied
