Title: Knowledge, attitude and practices among pupils towards hand washing in basic schools _Ombadda locality –Khartoum State_ 2017.

Abstract: Background: Proper hand washing technique is easy to learn and can significantly reduce the spread of infectious diseases among children. This descriptive cross sectional school based study was conducted in Ombadda locality Khartoum State, with an objective to study knowledge, attitude, and practices among basic schools pupils towards hand washing. Material and Methods: A sample size of 400 pupils was determined using statistical formula.The sample size was selected by random using lottery method out of six public schools and six private schools among 204 girls and196 boys, were in grades 5-8 and the sample size was distributed proportionally. Data were collected using interview and observation and a pre-prepared and pre-tested questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 16 and the associations between different variables were checked using Chi-Square Test at 95 %confidence level. Results : The majority of the pupils 95% knew the proper way of hand washing with soap and water, 96 % knew the appropriate times for hand washing. Sixty five percent of the pupils knew the benefits of hand washing and 88.2% knew diseases related to the practice of not washing hands. Twenty five percent of the pupils information about hand washing from family members, 94.8% had positive attitude towards hand washing with soap and water,70.3% of the pupils practice hand washing with soap and water at appropriate times, 39.5% practice hand washing in time ranged between 20–30 seconds and 63.1% of the pupils had not practiced wash their hands with soap and water at school . Conclusion: The study concluded that knowledge and attitude were generally high and positive , while practice was low among pupils towards hand washing. The study recommendes that health education program to sustain and promote awareness among pupils as regards hand washing and sustain and reinforce the knowledge towards benefits of hand washing and practices at critical times especially before eating and after using toilet.
