Abstract: Diazinon is a thiophosphoric acid ester compounds, used as insecticides for ectoparasites in farms, gardens and houses, and may have toxic effects if taken with contaminated food or water. Therefore this study was undertaken to investigate the safety or otherwise of this compound in birds. Four groups of 15 one month old Hupered broiler chicks each (A, B, C and D) were housed in the experiment animal unit Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Khartoum during the period Febreuary -April, 2014. Group A, B and C were given 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 ml diazinon (60% concentrations) /L H2O respectivly daily .Group (D) control chicks were given only water. All chicks were observed for seven weeks. Blood samples were collected weekly during the experiment period. Postmortem examination was performed on dead or euthanized chicks at the end of the experiment. The clinical signs observed in the chicks in the three groups which had diazinon were frothy and mucous secretions from the mouth and nose, interrupted diarrhea, continuous gasping with rapid respiration, paralysis of the wings and legs, uncontrollable movement and recumbency. In all test groups serum enzymes ALT and AST showed no significant changes from that of control values .Total serum proteins were found to increase while serum cholesterol decreased when compared to control values. At postmortem examination no significant gross changes were observed except in few cases in groups B and C which showed congestion and hemorrhage in liver, lung and kidney.XII Histologicalpathological changes were seen in lung liver and kidney of treated chicks. The lung showed congestion and hemorrhage, nodular mucosal thickening of the secondary bronchi, interstitial oedema and hypertrophy of bronchial smooth muscles. Dilated air sacs with thickening of the septal wall and aggregates of mononuclear cells have been observed. In the liver congestion, hemorrhage and fusion of hepatic cords were commonly seen and dilated sinusoids were noticed in some sections. Kidney showed dilated Bowman's space, prominent central mesangial cells, detachment of tubular epithelium from the basement membrane and ureteral muscle hypertrophy. Heart and spleen sections showed no significant histological changes. In conclusion doses of diazinon used in this work were very low, so as not to induce significant liver injury; that would result in significant increase in the enzymes activities or significant histological changes in the inspected organs. It is recommended that further studies be conducted using different diazinon concentration to establish safe doses for chicks. Diazinon is along acting insecticides, safe doses can be given in water against internal parasites.
