Abstract: Distribution systems losses are the major losses in electrical power systems. The main objective of this thesis is to study the losses in SEDC networks. The thesis works out a hypothesis that feeding customers' directory form medium voltage will decrease the overall losses in the SEDC network. Thesis began by running a simulating model investigating the impact of eliminating the low-voltage network of AL-Basher city's losses. This system is used successfully in the USA. The thesis aims to check the adoption of this system in Sudan by simulation model using NEPLAN program. Four different models (A, B, C, D) were designed for Al-Bashir city network in Red Sea State, specifications and data were taken from Geographical Information System program(GIS); all models are identical in loads, conductor’s length and total transformers capacities. NEPLAN program was used to simulate the research problem. The simulation result shows that the losses were decreased from 22.58% in case A, to 14.31% in case B, to 12.33% in case C and to 5.46% in case D. These results reveal a very high reduction in losses reached 5.46% when customers were divided into small groups and each group feed by 15 KVA transformers as in model D. This design makes the grid more flexible in absorbing additional loads and the increased losses due to the increasing loads is which read 3.42% to 12.22% in minimum load and 6.53% to 30.66% in maximum load compared to current design. The thesis concluded the validation of the hypothesis that eliminating low voltage networks can reduce losses in the SEDC network. The thesis recommends further researches to use same method for study 33 KV by same program or used ETAB program; and to apply model D practically in SEDC network determining the actual appliances needed for the adoption.
