dc.description.abstract In the recent decades scientists and researches relay on WSN to monitor certain phenomena remotely, as part of many researches in different branches. These networks suffer from lack of energy as initiated to transmit packets since batteries were not easily replaceable or rechargeable. The deterioration of energy consumption was affecting network lifetime, one technique to reduce the energy consumption is by using an efficient routing protocols. This research investigates the essential problem of energy consumption reduction by designing a routing protocol called Improved Virtual Grid Architecture (IVGA) protocol, based on Low Energy Adaptive Cluster (LEACH) as master aggregators. The designed protocol tested by a simulation model of two scenarios, the first simulated IVGA protocol and the second simulated VGA protocol, while the LEACH protocol performance is considered from pervious works. The simulation used two values of energy 20V/2.8maH and 80V/2.8maH, data rates changed to 10bps, 50bps and 100bps. The simulation result shows that the network lifetime in IVGA protocol performance better than VGA and a LEACH protocol by a factor of 1.5 and 4 respectively for different data rates and different energies. The simulation shown IVGA protocol had maximum delay over VGA protocol as well as LEACH protocol. In evaluating the number of hops crossed by a packet IVGA protocol recorded fewer by factor of 0.75 than VGA and LEACH protocols. The number of sensors nodes alive IVGA and VGA protocols shown almost the same number of nodes alive, while LEACH protocol was fewer, but the difference in the time taken to reach the number of nodes alive, IVGA protocol revealed the longer time by 200 (s), 350(s) over LEACH and VGA protocols respectively. The simulation recorded the number of transmissions for IVGA, VGA protocols, where IVGA protocol shown highest number of transmissions by factor between 1 and 2.5 irrespect to energy change. In evaluation the time of first node dead IVGA protocol registered five times over VGA, and two times over LEACH. en_US
