Title: Evaluation of Correlation Between Vertical Dimension of Occlusion and Various Facial Measurements in a group of Sudanese Adults
Author: Sultan, Nmariq Mohammad Awadalkareem
Abstract: Background: Measurement of Vertical Dimension of Occlusion (VDO) is considered as one of the most important and sensitive steps in complete denture construction. Recording it may raise a challenge as its recording relies on movable soft tissues. Objective: To evaluate the correlation between VDO and various facial measurements in a sample of Sudanese adults. Materials and methods: 113 dental students (33 males and 80 females) were enrolled in this study with mean age (21.7 ± 1.26) years. Subjects with Angle Class I occlusion and harmonious profile were selected. Facial measurements including (Eye-Mouth, Eye-Eye, Eye-Ear and Ear Height) were compared with two different measurements of VDO [(N-Gn) and (Sn-Me) distances]. Results: Correlation between variables was tested using Pearson correlation coefficient test with a significant level of (p<0.01). It showed a positive significant correlation between all measured facial distances and both measured VDO distances. Though, the strongest correlation was seen for the eye-mouth distance (r=0.725, P<0.001), while the weakest was for ear height (r=0.254, p=0.007). Paired t-test revealed a longer N-Gn distance than Sn-Me distance. Also it has been shown that there were no significant differences between Rt and Lt sides of the face. Conclusions: Facial measurements could be utilized in predicting VDO.The distance measured from outer canthus of the eye to angle of the mouthcan be used to predict Subnasale-Menton (Sn-Me) distance.
